Many people find that having facelift surgery abroad is an attractive option for them. Surgery candidates feel that being away from their regular environment is an excellent way to rejuvenate both body and mind. Besides that, having facelift surgery abroad offers notable cost savings with a favourable exchange rate. Surgery that corrects excess facial skin, jowls and loose neck skin often requires removing fat and tightening muscles and skin. The most popular reason for this surgery is to look more attractive and youthful. It is most common amongst women and men over 40. A general procedure can be combined with eyelid surgery, liposuction of the chin area and an endoscopic forehead lift.

Although there is always a marked improvement in overall appearance with surgery, it has certain limitations and is always done with safety top of mind. The surgeon will remove only as much skin as the body can safely allow. It is important to understand that it is not actually the skin that suspends the jowls and the neck but the underlying fascia known as the SMAS. Before undergoing face and neck lift surgery abroad, Dr Jedeikin will discuss everything in detail. A full explanation can be done via email or during an online consultation on Skype.
In some cases, additional procedures can be done at the same time as face and neck lift surgery. This may include eyelid surgery, a brow lift, neck surgery, and laser skin resurfacing in targeted areas. These options are assessed and discussed in detail during the consultation.
During the healing process there is likely to be swelling, pain, bruising, bleeding, scarring and tenderness. Pain management and rapid recovery options are administered to enhance healing and to create optimal comfort for face and neck lift candidates.
Some of the most frequently asked questions about facelifts follow below:
Individuals who want to improve their skin tone and remove excess skin around the face and jowls. Those who seek to restore facial muscle tone; reduce visible fatty areas; saggy jowls or skin. In addition, those who want to remove the appearance of a double chin. Facelift surgery abroad is also available to those wanting to look more youthful.
A facelift is a major surgical procedure, taking about three hours. It may be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthetic. To minimise swelling, drain tubes are inserted after the operation and are removed about 24 – 48 hours later. Postoperatively, there’ll be swelling of the face/neck and possible bruising on the eyelids. Bruising will be most apparent on the second and third days, and subsides from between one and six weeks after surgery, depending on your age, type of skin and healing ability.
You may go home on the same day of the operation, if fully awake, or you may overnight in hospital. You must not drive, so please arrange that someone fetches you. It will also be necessary to have a responsible adult spend the first 24 – 72 hours with you at home after the surgery. Alternatively, stay for this period at a medical recuperation facility. Dr Jedeikin has a Recovery Retreat where most of his patients recover for 2-4 nights after facial surgery. The option of this facility will be made available for patients from abroad as well as local patients.
Social activity should be limited for about 10 – 20 days. Avoid strenuous activity for 2 – 6 weeks or when all bruises have faded and there is no discomfort; but it is best to avoid any physical activity. You can shower by the second day (after drains have been removed) but be careful not to apply any strain to the wounds and not to ‘fiddle’ with them. Most patients can return to work and normal activities wearing light make-up, after about seven to ten days.
This time period is usually between 7 to 10 years.
Clients often ask about the possible risks of facelift surgery. Although there are always risks involved with every surgery, patients can be assured every precaution is taken to minimize potential risks on every level.
In most cases, there is little to no scarring visible.
Depending on the extent of the surgery the costs will vary, the administrative team will give you a detailed quote before proceeding. Surgery abroad, especially in South Africa, can have substantial cost saving benefits because of favourable exchange rates.
Candidates should not smoke before, during and after the surgery. The clinic will issue guidelines for preparation beforehand.
A facelift is a delicate and extensive procedure. The fine suturing of the deep muscle layer must be protected from tearing in the first two weeks. Sudden jerks or movements may cause the innermost stitches to pull free and so compromise the long-term result. The following restrictions must be observed after the operation:
